Share: Getting Help From Female Doctor

Hi! I\’m 39 and have known that I was gay when I was about 11-12. I didn\’t really have a lot of crushes on boys my age, they were always for older men. I grew up around a bunch of homophobic,pro-religious people who thought that being gay was wrong and this sent me into depression and serious denial of who I am. I used to go swimming at a rec-center near me and seeing all the naked men walking around the change room and finding a ripped up Plygirl magazine all over the road really made it evident that I liked men. For years I went into hiding and alcoholism. I still really wanted to meet a man for some intimate moments but the self guilt was too much. When I turned 36, I decided that I needed someone else to know about me so I went to my woman doctor and collected enough courage to tell her. It was the most peaceful and supportive converstion that I had in years as she was so supportive of me and now I can feel comfortable talking to her about boyfriend problems or concerns anytime. I\’m still not out to my family yet but she gave me some self-confidence that I was lacking and after talking with her, I finally started dating. I ended-up meeting a wonderful boyfriend for an 8-month relationship. There\’s no wonder why gay men and straight women get along so well, we both have one thing in common——we love men!! Brian

Lance Bass Sponsors Gay-Friendly High School Prom

Lance Bass/Courtesy: Babble

N’Sync singer Lance Bass and some other famous gays are helping support a gay-friendly prom in Mississippi, where a high school lesbian was denied bringing her partner to the event.

According to the Associated Press, Bass, Green Day and celebrity chef Cat Cora are among those helping to pay for a gay-friendly prom in Mississippi next month.

Organizers say the event is open to everyone but geared toward gay students.

The American Humanist Association also will contribute $20,000 for the May 8 event in Tupelo.

The annual prom is organized by the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition.

This year’s event has drawn attention because of the case of Constance McMillen, a high school senior who challenged her school district’s rule banning same-sex dates at proms.

Ricky Martin Finally ‘Comes Out’

Ricky Marti/Courtesy: UPI/Jim Ruymen/Landov

Latin superstar Ricky Martin is finally “coming out,” saying he’s been living la vida as a gay man for quite awhile.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Martin announced on his blog today that he is “a fortunate gay man,” which probably elicited two reactions: “duh!” and “double duh!”

Duh: Anyone who looks like Ricky is “fortunate.” And double duh: The announcement that he’s gay is about as shocking as when Sean Hayes came out on the cover of The Advocate last month.

After all, Ricky has been living la vida “don’t ask, don’t tell” for a long time—sometimes there was a girlfriend; other times, Ricky was doing stretching exercises on a beach with another guy in a Speedo.

But let’s put the cynicism (and the “He Bangs” jokes) aside for a moment. Coming out — even in this post Ellen/Rosie/Lance Bass/Neil Patrick Harris age — takes courage, especially when you’re a public figure.

You immediately become a spokesperson, whether you like it or not (and for that matter, whether the gay community wants you to be or not.) In fact, the entire gay movement can apparently rest on your shoulders: “[Ricky Martin's] decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to a greater acceptance for countless gay people in the U.S., in Latin America and worldwide,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of GLAAD, in a statement.

‘The Amazing’ Randi Finally Comes Out At Age 81

James “The Amazing” Randi/Courtesy: Wired.com

James “The Amazing” Randi is finally coming out of the closet at 81, writing in his blog that that he was inspired by the movie “Milk.”

According to Metro Weekly, Randi wrote in his blog (Randi.org) ”I’m gay…. From some seventy years of personal experience, I can tell you that there’s not much “gay” about being homosexual. For the first twenty years of my life, I had to live in the shadows, in a culture that was — at least outwardly — totally hostile to any hint of that variation of life-style…. This declaration of mine was prompted just last week by seeing an excellent film — starring Sean Penn — that told the story of politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. I’m in excellent company: Barney Frank, Oscar Wilde, Stephen Fry, Ellen DeGeneres, Rachel Maddow, are just a few of those who were in my thoughts as I pressed the key that placed this on Swift and before the whole world…”

Expert Testifies Gays Raise Healthy Kids

Gay Parents/Courtesy: Mundomais

During the U.S. federal court case on California gay marriage, a British child psychologist testified Friday that children raised by gay and lesbian couples develop just as well as those brought up by traditional couples.

According to Reuters, pedophile priests and whether the number or gender of parents was most important were core topics in testimony.

Lawyer David Thompson, defending the ban, jousted with Michael Lamb, head of the Social and Developmental Psychology Department at Cambridge University, about whether a child growing up without a father or without a mother would face developmental problems.

Two gay men and two lesbian women are asking the federal court to rule the right to marry has no exceptions under the U.S. Constitution, a fight they hope to take all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in a bid to overturn bans on same-sex marriage in 40 states.

A key question in the case is whether government, and U.S. voters, has a reasonable justification for denying same-sex couples the right to marry, such as promoting healthier families, or if the bans reflect discrimination and hatred.

The record of evidence gathered by Federal District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker, including the issue of whether gays are good parents, may be relied upon heavily by appeals courts, which generally do not have as much time to review a case as in the original trial.

Walker asked one of the most striking questions of the day — what the rash of pedophile priests suggested about the abilities of gays and lesbians in bringing up children.

“You’ve testified that there is no reason to protect children from lesbians and gays,” said Walker. “How do you square your statement with that phenomenon,” the judge asked.

“I don’t want to convey the fact that homosexual individuals never abuse children, simply that they are no more likely to do so than heterosexual individuals,” Lamb replied.

A witness for the same-sex couples, Lamb argued that the quality of the relationship between a child and parents, the relationship between the parents, and the economic resources available to the family were the top issues for healthy children — not the gender or sexual preference of parents.

Kids had no trouble with their own sexual identity or other development due to growing up with same-sex parents, he argued, and the ways fathers and mothers interacted with kids was not as important as having two parents, he said.

Is Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Gay?

Rudolph/Courtesy: Rankin-Bass

Have you ever wondered if the animated classic “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” is sort of a coming out story for the little loveable reindeer?

According to an article in Entertainment Weekly, the 1964 Rankin-Bass animated classic Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer has been a favorite Christmas special for many. But now some people are starting to notice something interesting – a sort of coming out tale.

Rudolph has this problem: He has a very shiny nose (you could even say it glows.) All of the other reindeer laugh and call him names, and Rudolph’s father, Donner, is horrified. (No son of his … etc.) Donner insists that Rudolph cover his nose with mud. Rudolph hates the mud, and feels like he’s living a lie, but at least he fits in. Problem is, he can’t seem to keep that nose out of sight, especially when he’s getting physical with his friend Fireball.

Meanwhile, Hermey, the perfectly coiffed elf, wants to be a dentist, but he can’t be because elves aren’t allowed to be dentists. They have to make toys. The two boys meet and discover they have a connection, and, realizing that they can’t be their true selves in this oppressive, small-town North Pole, the flamboyant reindeer and the elf with the oral fixation set off in search of a place where they belong. They find it in the Island of Misfit Toys, an ice floe ruled by a winged lion where other fabulous toys (e.g a Charlie-in-the-Box, and a doll with abandonment issues) who don’t quite behave or look like they’re “supposed to” can live together in peace and harmony. (Think West Hollywood).

Should You Come Out During The Holidays?

Gay Santa/Courtesy: Antwerp.Wordpress

As your family gathers to celebrate the holidays is this the best time to tell them you’re gay? Many experts believe Christmas is not the time to do it.

According to Weekly Surge, coming out is always a difficult step to take in any LGBT person’s life. Even if you have the hippest family on the block, it’s often difficult to make that all important announcement about who you are, and what better time to drop that ultimate family bombshell — the holidays?

PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) actually suggests that you avoid such holidays as Christmas, saying “try not to blurt it out inappropriately . . . aim to choose an unstressed time,” according to a guide entitled “Coming Out to Your Parents.”

Rugby Legend Gareth Thomas Comes Out

Gareth Thomas/Courtesy: Daily Mail

One of the most masculine sports legends on the planet comes out, saying he’s gay and that “keeping this secret was driving me crazy.”

According to the Daily Mall, Gareth Thomas, a highly accomplished Welsh rugby player, publicly announced that he is gay.

That secret, which he’d kept hidden his entire career, was – he admits now – ‘like a tight knot in my stomach, always threatening to seep out’.

He says: ‘I was like a ticking bomb. I thought I could suppress it, keep it locked away in some dark corner of myself, but I couldn’t.

‘It was who I was, and I just couldn’t ignore it any more.

‘I’d been through every emotion under the sun trying to deal with this.

‘You wake up one morning thinking: “I can handle it. Everything is fine,” and the next morning you don’t want anyone to see your face, because you think that if people look at you, they will know.’

That summer, he had confessed the truth to his devastated wife Jemma, unable to cope with the guilt of deceiving her.

But even as their marriage crumbled, he’d somehow hoped to maintain his charade for the rest of the world.

‘My life seemed to be falling apart. Jemma and I were splitting up, and I was scared of the future and being single again as a gay man,’ says Gareth, 35.

‘A coach named Scott Johnson, a great man, came up to me in the dressing room after the game for a chat and I just broke down in tears.

‘He said: “What’s up?” ‘I said: “Me and Jemma have split,” and he said: “Oh no, what’s happened?” Then he said: “I know what’s happened, I know what it is.”‘

Somehow, the coach had guessed.

Gay Man Finally Comes Out At Age 61

 Howard Selekman/Courtesy: CNN

After years of being married, Howard Selekman finally came out! But experts say coming out as gay or lesbian later in life is not uncommon.

According to a CNN report, Selekman knew he had been attracted to men since he was 8, but in his 20s he still planned to marry a woman and have children with her.

When he brought his fiancee to see his psychiatrist, the young woman was optimistic, even though she knew Selekman was gay.

“And I will never forget my psychiatrist saying, ‘No, it will not overcome all of the obstaclesm’ ” he said.

The next 36 years would prove his psychiatrist right — Selekman never overcame his feelings that indicated he was gay.

This year, at age 61, he finally divulged his sexual identity to his brothers, and “went public” through sharing his story on CNN’s iReport.
